Swimming Drills

Invitational Meet

This meet will have considerably more swimmers and teams when compared to the dual one. In the initial stages, this even was given this name because a team had to get invitation from a host team in order to participate, but now this is a general term which is used to refer to meets of this style. Generally, this kind of meet will have many teams, hundreds of swimmers and a large number of events. Swimmers of all levels will perform at invitational style events one or more times throughout their season, but those from USA Swimming clubs will almost attend these meets exclusively because there are few leagues in this group and they functions as one giant league. The majority of meets in this style does not have limitations regarding the amount of swimmers to enter the events and will only restrict how often a swimmer will be able to swim to make the flow of the event more manageable.

Olympic Trials

One can enter the trials for Olympic every four years and since this particular meet features coveted reward, such as a place on the US Team, so basically this will attract the fastest in this sport. For this reason, the entry standards for USA swimming times are actually much faster compared to National Championships. But, despite the fact that it is a faster event and could in fact provide the most accurate indication for the person who would be the fastest swimmer in America, the winner of all the events is not technically regarded as a National Champion. Besides that, this meet will not be held instead of the National Championships every four years.

Depending on your level of fitness and swimming techniques, your instructor is more than likely going to start off with freestyle training, so will highlight some of these routines below.

Most people consider freestyle strokes to be the most basic and it is said to be the perfect start for beginners. Based on the style of training your instructor might start off the routines in a pool or even on land by simply going through all the motions of this stroke. There are times when the mock practice for swimming strokes on dry land have proven to be very helpful for swimmers when they are just starting out, because they are only required to focus on performing it without having to deal with the water. These days, it is possible to get training videos that you are able to watch at your convenience in order to practice the different routines.

Now, let us look at some simple instructions to help with freestyle swimming.

Get started by entering the water and then assuming a position flat on your stomach. Next, place both arms to the front and then move one of your hands in a downward position so that you can push water away from you. You should try to do this as if are chasing water with your palm, but keep your fingers joined with each other.

After that, continuously swing your hand to ensure that it goes by your thigh and leaves the water.

Allow your hand to sway above your head and then move to the front until it makes contact with your other hand, consequently this hand will now start doing its motions.

When you are doing this, ensure that your hands are relaxed instead of stiff before placing them into the water.

As soon as your hand reaches your thigh, you can turn your head at the same time and take a breath.

Your legs are very important to complete this stroke because you are required to use your thigh muscles in order to kick out or flutter, in order to help your hands to gain the right momentum within the water.

With any luck, the information above will help you to get started and better prepare you for not only the junior nationals swimming meets but also the Olympic Trials.
